We're gonna start out looking at a little introduction to this book of Leviticus as we move on and are through the Bible series.

Speaker 1:

The book of Moses is called by the title of Leviticus because it records the duties of the Levites. This book describes the role of sacrificing God's plan. Though mankind has sinned, god will accept a substitute for the death of the sinner. It is a portent of things to come in the New Testament, where Jesus, the Lamb of God, takes away the sin of the world, which we saw in John 1-29. Leviticus contains material which delineates civil, sanitary, ceremonial, moral and religious laws from God. The main purpose of this book is to show that God is holy and that man is sinful. However, if man will recognize this fact and obey, he is permitted to approach God. Each type of offering was commanded to teach God's way to this new nation. We know that this new nation is Israel. If you've been following through with me, you know that we are going through this book chronologically, so open to Leviticus, chapter 1. We're going to read and then we're going to crawl through the verses Leviticus 1, let's read 1.

Speaker 2:

The Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting. He said Speak to the Israelites and say to them when any of you brings an offering to the Lord, bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock. If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he used to offer a male without defect he must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be acceptable to the Lord. He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. He is to slaughter the young bull before the Lord, and then Aaron's sons, the priests, shall bring the blood and sprinkle it against the altar on all sides at the entrance to the tent of meeting. He is to skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. Then Aaron's sons, the priests, shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

Speaker 2:

If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep or the goats, he is to offer a male without defect. He is to slaughter it at the north side of the altar before the Lord and Aaron's sons. The priests shall sprinkle its blood against the altar on all sides. He is to cut it into pieces and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat, on the burning wood that is on the altar. He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water and the priest is to bring all of it and burn it on the altar.

Speaker 2:

It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, he is to offer a dove or a young pigeon the priest shall bring it to the altar, ring off the head and burn it on the altar. Its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar. He is to remove the crop with its contents and throw it to the east side of the altar, where the ashes are. He shall tear it open by the wings, not severing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is on the fire, on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

Speaker 1:

Alright, now, before we get started, one of the first things that I want to point out is the first verse of chapter one, is the word then, which is an adverb, which means something that is at that time and at the time in question. So it's very important to pay attention to the words and the context of what's going on. It starts out with then, but what we're going to do is because Exodus flows right into Leviticus. In the chronological order, we are going to start out by reading Exodus, chapter 40, verse 34, through Leviticus, chapter 1 and verse 1, to get it all in this context. Now, this is the glory of the Lord. We're talking about Exodus 40 and 34. Then the cloud covered the 10th meeting. So this is where we are, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle, and Moses was not able to enter the 10th of meeting because the cloud had settled on it and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. And throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel was set out. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out into the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel. Then the Lord called to Moses and spoke to him from the 10th of meeting. So we see the continuation. So when it says then we're talking about the tabernacle At the end of Exodus 40, we see that they are at the tabernacle Excuse me, the tabernacle. Then we see that the Lord calls out to Moses from the tabernacle and I remember that at the end of Exodus the tabernacle is complete. Then the Lord called to Moses. So the first thing we notice is that the Lord is speaking audibly to Moses. It didn't say that he spoke to Moses in a dream. It said then he called to Moses and spoke to him from the 10th of meeting. So the Lord is speaking directly to Moses from this 10.

Speaker 1:

Verse 2. Saying Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them when any man of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your offering of animals from the herd or the flock. Now the Lord was very specific with the article in front of the herd or the flock and he is telling Moses that when any man of you any man of who he's talking about Israel. Remember, this is Israel after they've crossed the Red Sea. This is Israel after they have built the tabernacle. The 10th meeting. This is who the Lord is talking about and we know that this whole book is about the duties of the Levites and it's about sacrifices and we're going to go over all of that. We'll pick it back up in verse 3.

Speaker 1:

The Lord is still speaking. If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, he shall offer it a male without defect. He shall offer it at the doorway of the 10th meeting that he may be accepted before the Lord. The Lord is very specific of where this offering has to be given. He said it has to be given in the doorway. He didn't say in the Holy of Holies, he said in the doorway, verse 4. He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering that it may be accepted for him to make atonement on his behalf and he shall slay the young bull before the Lord and Aaron's sons. The priests shall offer up the blood and sprinkle the blood around on the altar that it is at the doorway of the 10th meeting. We're still at the doorway of the 10th meeting.

Speaker 1:

Verse 6. He shall then skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. We're talking about the Levites and the sons of Aaron. The priest shall put fire on the altar and arrange wood on the fire. Then Aaron's sons, the priests, shall arrange the pieces the head and the suet over the wood which is on the fire that is on the altar. So they're going to put these things on the altar.

Speaker 1:

Verse 9. It's in trails, however, and its legs he shall wash with water, and the priest shall offer up, in smoke, all of it on the altar for a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the Lord. The Lord is very specific on how this offering is to be given Verse 10. But if his offering is from the flock of the sheep or of the goats for a burnt offering, he shall offer it a meal without defect, and he shall slay it on the side of the altar, nor for it before the Lord. I'm going to stop right there for a second. If it's in the offering of the flock of the sheep or goats, it's to be offered on the north side before the Lord and Aaron's sons. The priests shall sprinkle his blood around on the altar. He shall then cut it into pieces, with his head and its suet, and his priests shall arrange them on the wood which is on the fire that is on the altar. Now we see that the Lord is still giving very specific orders on how this is to be done.

Speaker 1:

Verse 13.

Speaker 1:

The entrails, however, and the legs he shall wash with water and the priest shall offer all of it and offering up in smoke on the altar.

Speaker 1:

It is a burnt offering, an offering by fire, of a soothing aroma to the Lord.

Speaker 1:

Now we'll begin at verse 14. I have heard other Bible teachers say that these are still offerings, but this is of a, not a poorer offering, but maybe one of the men who couldn't offer up something of the flock, because you know it would have been expensive to have goats and and this type of cattle in this time. But if you were a little short on money, you could offer a bird, and this is what we are going to pick it up in first, verse 14. I remember I said that I heard some other Bible teachers say that, starting here, this is more for the man who couldn't offer a bigger offering verse 14 but if his offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds. Then he shall bring his offering from the turtle, dubs or from young pigeons verse 15 and the priest shall bring it to the archer in ring off his head and offer it up in smoke on the altar, and his blood is to be drained out on the side of the alter. So we see that they are still making an offering, but it's just a little bit different on how they're doing it. Pick it back up in verse 16. He shall also take away his crop with his feathers and cast it beside the alter, eastward to the place of the ashes. Now, this place of the ashes, eastward, would be a place where they took all the rest of the stuff and and disposed of it verse 17 then he shall tear it by his wings but shall not sever it, and the priest shall offer it up in smoke on the alter, on the wood which is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, an offering by fire, of a soothing aroma to the Lord.

Speaker 1:

We have to remember that there always has to be a sacrifice. Now we know that all of these laws, all of these sacrifices are nothing but a precursor of Jesus Christ, the ultimate sacrifice who is going to come thousands of years from here, but during this time, this is how Israel had to present themselves to the Lord, so their offering can be forgiven. All right, that brings us to the end of Leviticus, chapter 1. I hope you enjoyed it. Now listen, in our in the culture that we live in, some of this is kind of hard to take in because of all these offerings. But first of all, we're talking about the Lord, who created everything, created every human from the dust of the ground. He created every beast the same way. So if this is what the Lord called him to do to put up an offering like this that's just what had to be done. Remember what I said earlier wherever you hear this podcast, give it a like, share it, and let's just keep this thing going. Other than that, that is all for now. God bless.
