Speaker 1:

Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go through books of the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, wherever you are in the world. Thank you for joining. Grab a glass of water, a cup of coffee or tea. And nine the title of today's lesson is the passover. Now, the last time we were together we looked at the seven lampstands in Numbers, chapter 8. Today we are looking at the Passover, and we have broke the Passover down into three parts. Part one the Passover instructions. We see this in verses one through five.

Speaker 1:

Thus the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai as always, we see who the Lord is speaking to In the first month of the second year, after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying Now, let the sons of Israel observe the Passover at its appointed time, on the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight. You shall observe it at his appointed time. You shall observe it according to all his statutes and according to all his ordinances. So moses told the sons of israel to observe the passover. And they observed the passover in the first month, on the 14th day of the month, at twilight in the wilderness of Sinai, according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did. Now I would like to point out the first Passover. So they're having a Passover here, but I would like to point out the first Passover. Keep your finger here and go left in your Bible, back to Exodus, and go to Exodus, chapter 12. Exodus, chapter 12. Let's look at verses 1 through 13.

Speaker 1:

Now the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt this month shall be the beginning of months for you. It is to be the first month of the year of excuse me, year to you. Speak to all the congregation of israel saying on the 10th of this month, they are each one to take a lamb for themselves, according to their father's household, a lamb for each household. Now, if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor nearest to his house are to take one according to the number of persons in them, according to what each man should eat. You are to divide the lamb. Your lamb shall be an unblemished male, a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, and you shall keep it until the 14th day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of israel is to kill it at twilight. Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts, on the lintel of the house in which they eat it. And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. Do not eat any of it raw or boil at all with water, but rather roast it with fire, both his head and his legs, with his entrails, and you shall leave it, excuse me, and you shall not leave any of it over until morning. But whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire. Now you shall eat it in this manner, with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand, and you shall eat it in haste.

Speaker 1:

It is the Lord's Passover, for I will go through the land of Egypt on that night and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, and against all gods of Egypt. I will execute judgments. I am the Lord, and the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of egypt and that it was to be observed in the promised land. So we stand in chapter 12. Drop down to verse 24, exodus 12. Drop down to verse 24, and you shall observe this event as an ordinance for you and your children forever. And it will come about when you enter the land which the lord will give you, as he has a promise that you shall observe this right. So we see that they're in the pas, passover now, and we look back at the first Passover.

Speaker 1:

Now we'll move on to the second part, back to Numbers 9. The people must be clean. So instructions was given for the people to be clean. We see this in verses 6 through 14. But there were some men who were unclean because of the dead person, so that they could not observe Passover on that day, excuse me. So they came before moses and aaron on that day and those men said to him though we are unclean because of the dead person, why are we restrained from presenting the offering of the lord at his appointed time among the sons of israel? Moses therefore said to them wait, and I will listen to what the lord will command concerning you. Then the lord spoke to m saying Speak to the sons of Israel, saying If any one of you or of your generation becomes unclean because of a dead person or it is on a distant journey, you may, however, observe the Passover to the Lord In the second month, on the fourteenth day at twilight.

Speaker 1:

They shall observe it. They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. They shall leave none of it until morning, nor break a bone of it. According to all the statutes of the Passover, they shall observe it. But the man who is clean and is not on a journey and yet neglects to observe the Passover, that person shall then be cut off from his people, for he did not present the offering of the lord at his appointed time. That man shall bear his sin. And if an alien sojourns among you and observes the passover to the lord, according to the statute of the passover and according to his ordinance, so he shall do. You shall have one statute, both for the alien and for the native of the land. You shall have one statue both for the alien and for the native of the land.

Speaker 1:

So we see that the Lord's Passover was not only for the people of the land, but it could also be for an alien, which brings us to part three, the cloud and the tabernacle. We see this in verses 15 through 23. Now, on the day that the tabernacle was erected, the cloud covered the tabernacle with the tent of the testimony, and in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle into the morning. So I'm going to freeze right there for a second. I believe that not only did the Lord do it to give them some sense of light, but he did to show his presence, and I believe he also did it for heat Verse 16. So it was continuously the cloud will cover it by day and the appearance of fire by night remember, the cloud in the day would give them shade and it would give them guidance on where to walk. The pillar of fire by night gave them warmth and a covering verse 17. And whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent afterwards, the sons of israel would then set out. And in the place whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent afterwards, the sons of israel would then set out. And in the place where the clouds settled down there, the sons of israel would camp. I'm gonna stop again. This is not like the clouds we see in the sky that are constantly moving. What israel would do is this was a particular cloud. They knew it was the lord. You know how they knew, because wherever, wherever the clouds stopped, they would stop and the cloud would not move you and I have never seen a cloud just sit still.

Speaker 1:

Verse 18 at the command of the Lord, the sons of Israel was set out and at the command of the Lord, they would camp as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle. They remain camp, like I just said, wherever the cloud would stop, that's where they would stop. Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, the sons of israel would keep the lord's charge and not set out. If sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, according to the command of the lord, they remain camped. Then, according to the command of the lord, they set out. If sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning, they would move out. Or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out, still saying the same thing. You know they would stay put when they need to stay put and they will move when the cloud moved. Put when they need to stay put and they will move when the cloud moved. Rather, it was two days or a month or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, stained above it. The sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out, but when it was lifted they did set out. Whether it was a month, a couple of months, half a year or a year, they stayed put. That was the miraculous sign that the Lord gave them. They had a cloud over them that never moved and they didn't move into the cloud move.

Speaker 1:

We close with verse 23. At the command of the lord they camped, and at the command of the Lord they set out. They kept the Lord's charge according to the commandment of the Lord, through Moses and, as we know, of Israel in this time. That is how the Lord spoke to them. He spoke to them through his servant, moses. All right, that brings us to the end of Numbers, chapter nine.

Speaker 1:
