Reading Numbers 10

Speaker 2

Numbers 10 . The Lord said to Moses make two trumpets of hammered silver and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out . When both are sounded , the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting . If only one is sounded , the leaders , the heads of the clans of Israel , are to assemble before you . When a trumpet blast is sounded , the tribes camping on the east are to set out . At the sounding of a second blast , the camps on the south are to set out . The blast will be the signal for setting out To gather the assembly . Blow the trumpets , but not with the same signal . The sons of Aaron , the priests , are to blow the trumpets . This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come . When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing , you , sound a blast on the trumpet . Then you will be remembered by the Lord , your God , and rescued from your enemies . Also , at your times of rejoicing , your appointed feasts and new moon festivals , you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings , and they will be a memorial for you . Before your God , I am the Lord , your God .

On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year , the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the testimony . Then the Israelites set out from the desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the desert of Paran . They set out this first time , at the Lord's command , through Moses . The divisions of the camp of Judah went first , under their standard Nashon , son of Amminadab , was in command . Nethanel , son of Zuar , was over the division of the tribe of Issachar , and Eliab , son of Helan , was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun . Then the tabernacle was taken down and the Gershonites and Merorites who carried it set out . The divisions of the camp of Reuben went next , under their standard Eliezer , son of Shadur , was in command . Shalumiel , son of Zerushadai , was over the division of the tribe of Simeon , and Eliasaph , son of Duel , was over the division of the tribe of Simeon , and Eliasaph , son of Duel , was over the division of the tribe of Gad . Then the Kohathites set out carrying the holy things . The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived . The divisions of the camp of Ephraim went next , under their standard Elishema , son of Amahud , was in command . Gamaliel , son of Pedasur , was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh , and Abaddon , son of Gedionai , was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin . Finally , as the rear guard for all the units , the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard Ahazah , son of Amishadai , was in command . Padiel , son of Akran , was over the division of the tribe of Asher , and Ahira , son of Anan , was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali . This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out .

Now Moses said to Hobab of Reuel , the Midianite , moses's father-in-law we are setting out for the place about which the Lord said I will give it to you , come with us and we will treat you well , for the Lord has promised good things to Israel . He answered share with you whatever good things the Lord gives us . So they set out from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days . The ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest . The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp . Whenever the ark set out , moses said rise up , o Lord . May your enemies be scattered . May your foes flee before you . Whenever it came to rest , he said return O Lord , to the countless thousands of Israel .

The Purpose of Silver Trumpets

Speaker 1

All right , welcome back Now . The last time we were together we looked at the Passover and the cloud over the tabernacle . Today we are looking at the silver trumpets and the tribes leaving Sinai . Okay now , the first 10 verses are focused on the silver trumpets . So part one is the instructions was given by god concerning the trumpets . We see this in verses 1 through 10 . The lord spoke further to moses , saying I want to pause right there for a second . The lord continues to speak to moses and it starts out by saying the lord spoke further , which is showing that he was still speaking to Moses .

Speaker 1

From chapter nine Look , go left in your Bible , back to Numbers , chapter nine , and look at verse one , numbers nine , verse one . Thus , the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt , saying now let the sons of Israel observe the Passover at its appointed time . Now go back to chapter 10 , verse 1 . The Lord spoke further to Moses , saying the reason I like to point that out is that this is a whole continuation . Now , as I have mentioned several times , we are blessed in the times we've lived in the last few hundred years to where we have the Bible in chapter and verse format . We have punctuations , we have periods and commas . You know we have things that separates the word . That you know makes it easier for you and I to read and understand . But you have to understand that back during this time that did not exist . So when Moses wrote this book of Numbers it was written on a scroll , so it was continual , so it really flowed different . So , for an example , when the children of israel were re-going , rereading the book of numbers , when they got to verse 23 of chapter 9 , they didn't stop right there , like I do and like we do , and save chapter 10 for another time . It just kept on rolling . Give you an example numbers chapter 9 , verse 23 at the command of the lord they camped . And at the command of the lord they set out , they kept the lord's charge according to the command of the lord , through moses . The lord spoke further to moses , saying so that's where we are now . So this is just a continuation , so we will pick it up at chapter two .

Speaker 1

Remember we look at the first 10 verses , which focuses on the silver trumpets . The lord spoke further to moses saying make yourselves two trumpets of silver , of hammered work . You shall make them and you shall use them for summoning the congregation , for having camp set out , and when both are blown , all the congregations shall gather themselves to you at the doorway of the tent of meeting . Yet if only one is blown , then the leaders of the heads of the divisions of israel shall assemble before you . But when you blow an alarm , the camps that are pitched on the east side shall set out , and when you blow an alarm , the second time , the camps that are pitched on the south side shall set out . An alarm is to be blown for them to set out and pause right there real quick . It's kind of you know , like us , when , if you live in a state where they have tornado sirens , you know when you generally hear a tornado siren , you know that it's giving you a certain warning of what's going on . Generally , when you hear unless it's on a test day it's telling you to take cover . It's very similar to what's happening here .

Speaker 1

Different blowing of the trumpet is for different sections of the people Verse 7, . When covering the assembly , however , you shall blow without sounding an alarm . The priestly son of Aaron , moreover , shall blow the trumpets , and this shall be for you a potential statue throughout your generations , something that Israel was to continue to do . And when you go to war in your land against the adversary who attacks you , then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets that you may be remembered before the Lord , your God , to be saved from your enemies . The Lord is also saying that to do this command he has given them and is also assigned to him verse 10 also , in the day of your gladness and in your appointed feasts and on the first days of your months , you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings , and they shall be as a reminder of you before your god . I am the lord , your god .

Speaker 1

Now the second part of this . We are looking at verses 11 through 36 , where we are looking at the tribes leaving

Israel's Departure from Sinai

Speaker 1

sinai . So , starting at verse 11 now , it came about in a second year , in the second month , on the 20th of the month , that the cloud was lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony and the sons of Israel set out on their journey from the wilderness of Sinai . Then the cloud settled down in the wilderness of Paran . I'd like to pause right there for a moment . Now I'm looking at my map of Bible times and remember they are in Mount Sinai . They are at Mount Sinai Now they can remember the Lord opened up the Red Sea . They were in Egypt , which is in Northern Africa , and then they crossed over into this part of the world which is considered the Middle East . Now Mount Sinai is in the most Southern part of the Sin , which is considered the middle east . Now mount sinai is in the most southern part of uh , the sinai peninsula , which is where they are now . It says that the lord , uh that the cloud , moved up and it settled in paren . Now the wilderness of paren is north of there . Now I tried to figure out the mileage so I could kind of give you the distance . But to kind of give you an idea where uh they're going is a few hundred miles uh to the west of jordan . Now they are still in the senai peninsula , but they are . They . They have moved from south to north . So it kind of gives you an idea of , of where , of where they're moving to .

Speaker 1

We will continue on verse 13 . So they moved out for the first time according to the commandment of the lord , through moses and the standard of the camp of the sons of judah , according to their armies , set out first with nishan , the son of aminadab , over his army , and daniel , the son of zuar , over the tribal army of the sons of isachar . So we're going through all the tribes and Eliab , the son of Helan , over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun . Then the tabernacle was taken down and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merorai , who were carrying the tabernacle , set out . Remember how each tribe had jobs to do . So we see what the sons of Merorai jobs were .

Speaker 1

Verse 18 . Next , the standard of the camp of Reuben , according to their armies , set out with Eleazar , the son of Shador , over its armies , and Shalumael , the son of Zerushadai , over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon , and Eliasaph , the son of Duel , and over the tribal armies of the sons of Gad . Then the Kohathites set out carrying the holy objects and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival . Next , the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim , according to their armies , was set out with Elisha ma , the son of Emma , who , over its armies , and Gamaliel , the son of peters , are over at our tribal army of the sons of Manasseh as , as I keep mentioning , these are the tribes of Israel and how they are setting out . And Abaddon , the son of Gibeonai , over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin .

Speaker 1

Then the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan , according to their armies , which formed the rear guard

Speaker 1

for all the camps , meaning they're out rear set out , with Ahasuer , the son of Amishadai , over its army , and Pejael , the son of Akran , over the tribal army of the sons of Asher . Each tribe has a leader over it . And Ahara , the son of Enan , over the tribal army , or the son of Naphtali . This was the order of march of the sons of Israel by their army armies . As they set out , as mentioned , they are doing everything in order and this is what the Lord is commanding . This is not what Moses commanded , this is not them doing what they want to do . This , this is what the say of the Lord .

Speaker 1

Then Moses said to Hobad , the son of Reuel , the Midianite , moses' father-in-law , we are setting out to the place of which the Lord said I will give it to you , come with us and we will do you good , for the Lord has promised good concerning Israel . But he said to him I will not come , come , but rather will go to my own land and relatives . Now , this is moses , uh , this is . This is hobab , uh , this . So this would be moses brother-in-law . That was just speaking . Then he said please do not leave us in as much , as you know where we should camp in the wilderness , and you will be as eyes for us . That was moses asking brother law , please do not leave . So it will be . If you go with us , it will come about that whatever good the lord does for us , we will do for you .

Speaker 1

Thus they set out from the mount of the lord , three days journey with the ark of the covenant of the lord journey in front of them for the three days to seek out a resting place for them . Now we see how long this journey was . It was a three-day journey and the cloud of the lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp . Then it came about when the ark set out , that moses said rise up , oh lord , and let thine enemies be scattered and let those who hate thee flee before thee . What is Moses saying ? Because the cloud of the Lord , their protection , is above them . So he's asking the Lord to scatter out the people who will be the enemies ahead of time verse 36 . And when it came to rest , he said return thou , o Lord , to the myriad thousands of Israel . So when the Lord , when the clouds stopped and the Lord came to rest , the Lord Moses also set up another prayer . So he set up the first prayer , or the praise , if you will , to ask the Lord to go before them and to scatter the enemies . And then , when it was time to rest , he gave a prayer of rest . All right , that brings us to the end of Numbers , chapter 10 .
