Welcome to Berean's Corner, the podcast where we go through books of the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, wherever you are in the world. Thank you for joining. Grab a glass of water, a cup of coffee or tea and let's get into today's lesson. All right, all right, I hope you all are doing well. Welcome back to barren's corner.
Speaker 1:On this easter eve, resurrection sunday, whatever you may want to call it, I call it the day that our Lord raised from the dead and proved once and for all that he is God in the flesh. I want to do something this Easter 2025 and I want to go through the four gospels and talk about the resurrection account from each writer of the four gospels. Now we will start with Matthew. Now, as many of you know, matthew was one of the twelve disciples chosen by Jesus and he had an account of the resurrection. So, if you want to read along with me, we're starting out with Matthew in the 28th chapter, and in the 28th chapter we are talking about Jesus being risen and we are going to look at verses 1 through 15. Matthew 28, verse 1. Now, after the Sabbath, I'm going to stop right there. This is for those the critics out there who say that I've actually heard some nonsense Just actually just three days ago that there are people saying that Jesus rose on Monday, that he didn't rise on the first day of the week. Well, we all know that the Sabbath is the end of the week and Sunday is the first day of the week. Saturday and Sunday, as you and I may know it. But what does Matthew say in chapter 28, in verse 1, now after the sabbath? Well, that is that would be sunday, as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week. There's more of your proof it's beginning to be dawn on the first day of the week.
Speaker 1:Mary, magdalene and the other mary came to look at the grave and behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it, and his appearance was like lightning and his garment is white as snow and the guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. And the angel answered and said to the women do not be afraid, for I know that you are seeking for Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here. He has risen. Just as he said, come see the place where he was lying. Go quickly, tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead. And behold, he is going before you, and to Galilee. There you will see him. Behold, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy and ran to report it to his disciples. This would be the women running to tell the disciples what they just saw with their own eyes. Behold, jesus met them and greeted them, and they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then jesus said to them do not be afraid, go and take word to my brethren to leave for galilee, and there they shall see me. Now, while they were on their way, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priest all that had happened. And when they had assembled with the elders and counseled together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers and said you are to say his disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep, and if this should come to the governor's ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble. And they took the money and did as they had been instructed. And this story was widely spread among the Jews and is to this day.
Speaker 1:Now, from Matthew's account, we see what happened. There were soldiers there who actually saw this happen. They saw the earthquake and the angel which rolled away the stone. They fell as dead men and they ran off as pretty much any sane person would. Most people would not stand there if they see a being that they know is not human sitting up on a stone, especially sit up on a stone of a man that they are guarding, because it was said that he's going to rise on the third day. Instead, they go and tell the men of the city the elders of the city, if you will, and because they wanted to keep the truth from being known, they gave these men money and said listen, this is what you're going to do. You're going to say that his disciples came and stole his body, which is very interesting, because they this is the reason why these men were on guard. They were on guard to be sure that something like this didn't happen. Now I wonder how they explained that away to the people. If someone said well, wait a minute. You know there were two armed guards standing in front of this tomb. How did his disciples come and steal the body, when they're supposed to be men guarding the tomb and there was this huge stone road in front of it. They are the orders also mentioned to the soldiers, so you will not be in trouble. So, in other words, if they go back and tell the governor that his body is gone, he he may take it out on these guys and say you must have fell asleep or walked away. You weren't doing your job. So now, that is the account according to Matthew.
Speaker 1:Now I want you to turn to Mark 16, and we are going to look at it from Mark's account. Now, for any of you who don't know who Mark is, mark was not one of the apostles. Mark was a, a fellow worker, and it is believed that the gospel according to Mark was either a eyewitness notes that he took from Peter, or it was notes that Peter left, that he took and put together and wrote this gospel. But nonetheless, we are going to look at Mark 16 and look at the account coming from Mark, through the eyes of Peter, of the resurrection, and we are looking at verses 1 through 13 of Mark 16. And when the Sabbath was over. There we go again Now.
Speaker 1:This is two of the gospel writers when the Sabbath was over, mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, brought spices that they might come and anoint him. They were going to go and anoint Jesus' body and very early on the first day of the week, there we go again. The first day of the week they came to the tomb when the sun had risen and they were saying to one another who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb? Good question, these women are going to anoint the body and they want to know who's going to roll away this stone. And looking up, they saw the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large, and entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting at the right wearing a white robe, and they were amazed. And he said to them do not be amazed, you are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene who has been crucified. He has risen. He is not here. Behold, here's the place where they laid him. But go tell his disciples and peter, he is going before you into galilee. There you will see him, just as he said to you.
Speaker 1:Now, mark matthew and mark both have said that jesus is going into galilee verse 8 and they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them and they said nothing to anyone for they were afraid. Now, after he had risen early on the first day of the week, he first appeared to mary magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. He went excuse me, she went and reported to those who had been with him while they were mourning and weeping, and when they heard that he was alive and had seen and was seen by her, they refused to believe it. And after that he appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along their way to the country, and they went away and reported to the others, but they did not believe them either. Now, this is two accounts of the resurrection from two different sets of eyes.
Speaker 1:Now we are going to go to Luke, so turn to Luke, and I believe it's 24 that I want. I will tell you in just a second when I get my spot back. Yes, luke 24, so turn to Luke 24. Now. Luke was a physician, was a physician, and Luke was the only non-jew to write in this new testament. He wrote one of these gospels and writing in the new testament and we are going to be looking at verses 1 through 12 of Luke 24. Now you know that Luke went around and got this account of Jesus coming back from actual eyewitnesses and he reported it. So let's see what Luke had to say.
Speaker 1:But early on the first day of the week, luke has even said that at early dawn they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. He doesn't say the women, but we know from the other two accounts that he's talking about the women. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. But when they entered they did not find the body of the lord jesus. And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling apparel and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has risen. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in galilee, saying that the son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words and returned to the tomb and reported all these things to the 11 and to all the rest. Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary, the mother of James, also the other women with them, were telling these things to the apostles and these words appear to them as nonsense as they would not believe them. Now, even after three and a half years, and Jesus has told the apostles these things, what these women are telling them still sounds like nonsense in their ears. So it appears to me that these apostles didn't even believe that he was going to raise, like he said he would, because, like Luke said right here, they seem like nonsense to them.
Speaker 1:Chapter 24, verse 12. But Peter arose and ran to the tomb, stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only, and he went away to his home marveling at what had happened. So Peter ran along to see it for himself, to see it with his own eyes, and when he got there he didn't see the body, only the linen wrapping, and basically he walked away, you know, basically shaking his head, wondering you know what is going on. Now it's very interesting that he didn't go back and say, hmm, the Lord did what he said, but instead he walked away confused. Then we're going to go to John, the first gospel. Now, as you all know, john is one of Jesus' apostles and we're going to be looking at John, chapter 20 if you want to join me there John chapter 20, and we're going to be looking at verses 1 through 18. Now we would get the resurrection account from John now, on the first day of the week. Stop right there.
Speaker 1:Now all four writers of the gospels said what this happened on when the first day of the week. That's something that can't be disputed. Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the tomb, excuse me, the stone already taken away from the tomb, and so she ran to Simon Peter and to the tomb while it was still dark, and saw the tomb, excuse me, the stone, already taken away from the tomb. And so she ran to simon peter and to the other disciple whom jesus loved, that would be john and said to them they have taken away the lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth and the other disciple and they were going to the tomb.
Speaker 1:Now, if you look at verse two again, it says and I'm sorry this, if you look at verse verse one mary magdalene came early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the tomb had already been taken away and she ran and came to simon, peter and john. Okay, so mary magdalene is running to tell them what's going on. Verse three peter therefore went forth and the other disciple and they were going to the tomb and the two were running together and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first and, stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. That would be John. He looked in, he saw the wrappings laying there, nobody, but he didn't go in. Verse 6 Simon Peter therefore also came following them and entered the tomb and he beheld the linen wrappings lying there and the face cloth which had been on his head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. So the other disciple, who had first come to the tomb, entered then also and and saw and believed. Now John got there first and all he did was stoop and look in. Peter got there and ran right inside. After Peter went inside, then John went inside.
Speaker 1:Verse 9. For as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise again from the dead. So the disciples went away again to their own homes. But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping, and so she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb. Now Mary is back with them. And now she looked into the tomb and she beheld two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been laying. And they said to woman why are you weeping? She said to them, because they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him. When she has said this, she turned around and beheld Jesus standing there and did not know that it was Jesus. Okay, her eyes haven't been open yet. Now she knows who Jesus is, she knows what he looks like, but she turns around and look at this man and didn't realize that she was talking to the Lord himself.
Speaker 1:Verse 15,.
Speaker 1:Jesus said to her woman why are you weeping?
Speaker 1:Whom are you seeking? Supposing him to be the gardener? She said to him sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him, and I will take him away, and I will take him and I will take him away. Jesus said to her Mary. She turned and said to him in Hebrew Rabbi Nye, which means teacher. Now, she didn't know that she was talking to Jesus, but then, when he said her name, she turned and knew she was talking to the Lord, verse 17,. Jesus said to her stop clinging to me, for I have not yet ascended to the father, but go to my brethren and say to them I ascend to my father and your father and my God and your God. Mary Magdalene came announcing to the disciples I have seen the Lord and that he has said these things to her, so she goes back and repeat the things that the Lord says to her and that right there is the gospel from all four accounts from the apostle Matthew, the apostle John, from Luke, the physician, and from Mark, who was I'm sorry, excuse me and from Mark, who got the account from Peter.
Speaker 1:Now, this is very important and this is the biggest, most important thing in our faith, because jesus rising from the dead proves everything that he said he was. It proves that he is the ancient of days, it proves the prophecies that were said about him in the old testament, and him rising from the grave proves to everyone that he is god, he is the lord, and that what he did was finished. The veil was ripped from top to bottom and he became the mediator between us and the Lord. No longer did we need the priest to be the mediator, the high priest. No longer did any one of us, the Jews, or even us down the line, have to sacrifice any type of animals or anything. We could go directly to the lord in jesus name, and that's why we celebrate this easter.
Speaker 1:Like I said earlier, some of you may call it resurrection sunday. Whatever you want to call it is the day that we celebrate that the lord rose from the grave. All right, that is all for this one. I hope that you all have a great sunday. I hope that you got something out of this lesson. As always, pray for me that I continue the race and we get through these scriptures and we just keep these lessons coming, and I am praying for you as well. I appreciate you all very much.
