Welcome And What A Pastor Is
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Bereen's Corner, the podcast where we go through books of the Bible, chapter by chapter, and verse by verse. Wherever you are in the world, thank you for joining. Grab a glass of water, a cup of coffee, or tea, and let's get into today's lesson. A pastor is a man whom God calls, equips, and appoints to shepherd his people by faithfully teaching the Word of God, leading the church spiritually, caring for the congregation, protecting it from false doctrine, and serving as an example of Christ-like living. Welcome back and thank you for joining
SBC Vote And The Big Question
SPEAKER_00me. If you're wondering why did I start out with that definition of what a pastor is, is because I recently came across an article. Now it's I think it's a few months old, if I'm not mistaken. But the Southern Baptist uh convention, the SBC, is moving closer to a constitutional ban on women pastors. And I'm gonna read some of this article that I came across. It says that messengers at the church's annual meeting easily pass a measure barring churches with women pastors or those that allow women to preach. And let me read some of this article. A proposal by the nation's largest Protestant domination to ban churches that have women pastors to let women preach on Sunday mornings pass overwhelmingly on Wednesday, marking the first step towards enshrining the ban in the Southern Baptist Convention's Constitution. And this is actually a month ago, so this was June 11th. So you can see where we are. Uh the vote passed with a 74.6 percent vote. It says that uh it was voted in favor of the so-called truth and unity amendment during that Wednesday morning, which was June 11, as I just mentioned, at the SBC's annual meeting. Now, you can uh go look up this article and find it if you want to read the whole article for yourself. But what we're gonna be doing is that we're going to be jumping into scripture, we're gonna be looking at scripture and backing everything up with scripture. Does the SBC have this right? Is it about time that this happened? Well, as we always do here on Beren's Corner, whether we are doing our through the Bible podcast or our iron sharpens iron podcast, which is what this will be on, uh, we love to go to scripture.
Elders And Overseers In Acts
SPEAKER_00So let's start with Acts chapter 20. Acts chapter 20 and verse 28 says, Be on guard for yourselves for all the flock among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the church of God which he purchased with his own blood. What I'm doing is I'm establishing a foundation, and I'm actually gonna try to do this in order. Next, go to 1 Timothy chapter 2.
1 Timothy On Teaching Authority
SPEAKER_001 Timothy chapter 2. 1 Timothy 2, and we are starting at verse 9. This is Paul speaking. Likewise, I want women to endure themselves with proper clothing, modesty, and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as befit women making a claim of godliness. Let a woman quietly receive instruction with entire submission. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman, being quite deceived, fell into transgression. What is Paul establishing here? He's not, he did not say that there's not a place in the church for women. What he's saying is that they do not have the authority over a man. And when you look up that word in the Greek, that that is a male, it does not mean mankind, it does not mean people, it means a man. Turn to 1 Timothy chapter 3. And I'm gonna start reading in verse 1. It is a trustworthy statement. If any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife. I'm gonna put I'm gonna pause right there. If you're wondering who this overseer, overseer, elder, pastor, it's all going along the same line of the person who stands in front of the congregation and gives and gives the word of God. And if you were confused, what does it say? The husband of one wife. This is talking about a male, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach. Not that's key too, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, uh, on uh uncontentious, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity. But if a man, there it is again, does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God? And not a new convert, lest he become conceited. What is it? What is Paul talking about when he says, not a new convert? You you can't be new to this, you cannot have been saved a couple of months, honestly, even a year, year and a half, talking about uh the Lord called you to preach, and fall into the condemnation in cured by the devil. He must have, as another personal pronoun, he he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he may not fall into reproach and the stare of the devil. Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double tongue, or addicted to much wine, or find a sorbid gain, but hold into the mystery of the faith with clear conscience. Let these also first be tested, then let them serve as deacons if they are beyond reproach. Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be husbands of only one wife, there it is again, and good managers of their children and their own households. For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing with great confidence in the faith that is in Jesus Christ. I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long. Go
Titus And 1 Peter On Shepherding
SPEAKER_00to Titus. And when you get to Titus, we're gonna be looking at chapter one. I told you we're gonna be going over quite a bit of scriptures. Titus chapter one, I'm starting at verse five. For this reason I left you in Crete that you might set in under what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, namely, if any man be above reproach, the husband of one wife, there it is again, having children who believe not, accused of this uh uh dissipation or rebellion for the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not found of service sorbid gain, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just devout, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word, which is in accordance with the teaching that he may be able to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sorbit gain. One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy and gluttons. This testimony is true for this cause. Reprove them severely that they may be sound in the faith. What is going on here? Once again, what is Paul talking about to Titus? He is referring this to men. Turn to first Peter. When you get to 1 Peter, go to chapter 5. We look in verses 1 through 4. 1 Peter 5, 1 through 4. Therefore, I exhort the elders among you as your fellow elders and witness a suffering of Christ and a partaker also of the glory. This is to be revered, shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God, and not for sorbid gain, but with eagerness, nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. Well, now you now we had Peter giving this the giving the same thing. What are we talking about here? What are we looking at here? And what you might say, you know, well, you know, what's happening here? What's the point here? The point is that what the Southern Baptist Conference is doing is something that should have been done a long time ago. The truth is this is that there are many things that women can do, but one of those things is not to stand up in front of the church, is not to stand up in front of a group of people and uh be the an evangelist, to be a pastor, to be an overseer. And the Southern Baptist Committee Convention is finally putting an end to that with their vote. Now, it passed this year, it also has to pass next year because, according to their bylaws, whenever they take something to a vote, it has to pass two years in a row. Now, for anyone who gets upset or they get angry about it, all I'm doing is going through the word of God. We're taking the word of God like we always do here, straight chapter by chapter, verse by verse. We don't skip and go over anything to try to prove a point because here we're only going to stick to what saith the Lord. What I have to say about it does not matter at all. It's not important, it doesn't matter. Uh, it only matters what's written in the word of God. Now, you may wonder where some of this is coming from. You know, where is some of this uh anger coming from, or some of this wanting to be in the place of what God called these men to do?
Genesis And The Temptation Pattern
SPEAKER_00One of the first places I'm gonna go is I'm gonna go all the way back into Genesis, and you can follow me back there if you like. I'm going to Genesis chapter 3. Because you know, we need to see where some of this came from. You know, where did this men and women not wanting to stick to the roles that the Lord gave them? I'm going back to Genesis. Genesis chapter 3, and I'm starting at verse 1. Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field, which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Indeed, has God said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden. This is how Satan roused you up. Look at what he said to the woman. Is it true what the Lord said? Did God really say that? And the reason I went back here and I'm reading this is because I have had conversations with plenty of women. Some of them are my sisters in Christ. And the problem is when you start talking about how a woman is not called to be a preacher, she's not called to be a pastor, they sound just like Satan, the serpent, did in the garden, where they say, Is it true? Uh did God really say that? Is that really in the word of God? Did God say that? Yes, God did say that. Once again, he said to the woman, Indeed has God said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden. Now he knows good and well, that's what God said, and so did the woman. The woman said to the serpent, From the fruit of the trees of the garden, we may eat. But from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat from it or touch it lest you die. The serpent said to the woman, You shall surely not die. And that's the lie that he tells you. No, no, God didn't say that. You know, that's what God called you to do. You go up there and get up in front of that church and you uh use your authority over these men because you know, uh, you know, God called you to preach. See, that's that's how Satan talks, that's how he deceives you. The serpent, I mean, I'm sorry, for God knows that in the day you eat from it, your eyes will be open and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate. It's the same thing here. I believe that a lot of these women who call themselves being pastors, once they see the limelight, once they see the status, once they see the the uh the respect that a lot of these men get, it doesn't matter what the word of God says. No, no, that can't be right because God called me to this. Just like Eve said, Yeah, I don't, yeah, yeah, this serpent is right. The Lord is hiding something from me. So she reached out, she took the fruit, and she ate. And that's what happens with a lot of our sisters and a lot of these women. I'm not gonna call them all sisters, but some of them are sisters, some of them aren't. They want that what the Lord has given. And when some of these women get upset with you, this is what I want you to remember. It's not you that they're upset with. Who are they upset with? They're upset with God. Go to Romans chapter 8.
Flesh Versus God’s Order
SPEAKER_00Romans chapter 8, verse 7 says, Because the mindset on the flesh is hostile towards God, for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so. Their spirit is hostile to who is hostile towards God. Go to Ephesians 6. Go to Ephesians 6. Ephesians 6, look at verse 12. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. These people, their struggle is not with flesh and bone. It's telling you, it's telling you what their struggle is with. It's not against the flesh and the blood, but it's against, but it's against the rulers, the powers. It's against what's what's in this world. That's why the flesh riles up. Go to James. When you get to James, go to chapter 4. James chapter 4, verse 1. What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war against your members. A reason why a lot of these people are upset when they hear this is because it's that it's they're waging war, it's waging war against their own members. Like I said, it's not you that they're upset with, it's the Lord that they're upset with.
Why Doctrine Fights Break Out
SPEAKER_00Now, I want to go back to Ephesians chapter 4, and I'm going to pick it up at verse 11. So let's see, let's look at these offices. This is Paul writing. He, this is talking about the Lord, gave some as apostles and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, some as pastors, some as teachers. For the equipping of the saints, what is it for people? The equipping of the saints for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain the unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God to a mature man, to the measure of the statute which belongs to the fullness of Christ. As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by ways and carried away by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness and deceitful scheming. This is why you this is this is why you need the man to have that protection uh in that word of God. Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects unto him who is the head even to Christ. That is telling us what these offices are and who is called to these offices.
What Women Are Called To Do
SPEAKER_00So there are some things I would like to point out. Now, we have spent some time right now talking about the role of a pastor and the role of a preacher and the role of a teacher. So, what are some of the things that women can do? Well, some of the things that they can do is that they can they can teach women and they can teach children. Scripture tells us in many different spots that they are that the older women are to teach the younger women how to love their husbands. See, the problem is that a lot of these women want the status, they don't want to do what the Lord told them to do. The Lord said to teach the younger women how to love your husbands. We need older women, and by older women they mean women 40 and up who have been married to teach the younger women the way it is to love their husbands. Also, too, children, you are to teach the the children. And let's look at a few verses uh talking about this. While you're in Ephesians, uh stay in chapter uh 5 and go to verse 22. Ephesians 5 22 says, Wives be subject to your own husbands as to the Lord. So that's one thing that a woman can do. Now, a lot of women, really, especially these modern women, they really get upset when they hear that, but you you claim that you want to be in the Lord. That's something that the Lord told you to do. Go to Titus chapter 2. Let's let's let's see what else we we got going on here. Titus chapter 2. I am looking at verses 3 to 5. Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips, nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored. So Titus made it very clear here. Here are more things that we need women to do in the uh in the body of Christ. Uh to be reverent, to not be gossips, because that also teaches the young women not to behave that way, uh, not to be enslaved to wine. In other words, not to be an alcoholic, teaching what is good, that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands. Listen to the key there to teach the young women to love their husbands. That that is something that the older women are called to do, not to teach the women how the husbands are to love them, to teach the younger women how to love their husbands, also to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home. That's being a homemaker. Don't let any, if you are a homemaker and you're hearing this, don't let anyone tell you that the job you're doing is not important. It's a very important job. You are to be kind, you are to be subject to your own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored. Go to 1 Peter chapter 3. 1 Peter 3, look at verse 15. Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence. If you're wondering, well, why did you go to that scripture? Because that's something else that a woman can do. No, you cannot stand up in front of a church and teach and preach. But what you can do is that you can stay in those scriptures and always have a defense. There's nothing that says that a woman cannot have a defense for the hope that she has. Every woman should have that. Every woman should have uh a defense for the hope that she says she believed in. Every woman should be an apologist where if someone asks her, Why do you believe that? She shouldn't always have to look around and look to her husband for help. She is supposed to be able to give an answer to the faith that she has. And these are the things that a woman can do. And I want to say something something else about women. Don't don't get this twisted. Women can absolutely uh women are absolutely foundational when it comes to these scriptures, absolutely foundational and absolutely important, and play a great importance in the house and in the
Women Honoured In The Faith Story
SPEAKER_00family. How how how do I know that? Number one, before I get to something that Paul said to Timothy about two very important women in his life, I will say something about myself. Yes, I have the privilege of being under a man who takes the scriptures very serious. Uh, it took my family and I a while to find a man like that who takes the scriptures serious, who studies hard, who doesn't who doesn't wing it, who doesn't go off emotions, who doesn't uh tell stories the whole time and give you maybe one or two verses just so the service can be uh el so the service can be legal for your 501c3. But no, uh I have the privilege of being under a man who is a serious Bible student, and as I was becoming a serious Bible student, and we ran into this man, it and it emboldened me even more. But there was a seed planted way before I met my current pastor. The first person in my life who actually introduced me to the Lord, the first person who actually introduced me to Scripture, the first person who actually told me who Jesus Christ was and why he was and why we believe was my own grandmother, my own grandmother on on uh on my maternal side was the actual foundation, and I will always credit her with that foundation that that's where the seed was planted back when I was a when I was a kid, and as it says in Proverbs, I have never strayed away from it. Now, have I uh been the perfect believer most of my life? I absolutely have not, so I'm not trying. Tell you that, but the proverb says, What when you raise up a child in the way that he should go when he's older, he will not depart from it. That seed that my grandmother planted in me back from what I can what I can remember when I was seven, eight, nine years old, when we would sit and talk scriptures and go through the book of uh book of revelation, uh, on like on a regular basis, which is where my love of revelation actually came from. That's where it began. So don't get it twisted. No, I I do not stand on women being pastors. I agree with the SBC and I agree with the men who teach this in the scriptures that women are not called to be pastors, they are not called to stand up in front of a church and to teach and preach to men. But that doesn't mean that women do not play a very important role in the scriptures. Let me give you another example. When Christ rose from the dead, who was given the honor to report that he was seen? It was Mary, it was a woman. The women got up early in the morning, taking care of us like they do. They were going to the grave to embalm, uh, to uh, you know, put uh to take care of Jesus' body, because he had been in the grave a few days, and Jesus rises, the other women leave. Mary is there, Jesus shows himself to Mary, he reveals himself to Mary, and what does he say to her? He said, Go and tell my brothers that I have risen, like I said I would, and this is where I will meet them at. See, God gave that pleasure to a women to a woman. Now, for anyone who thinks that you know Christianity talks down on women, women, women, excuse me, when Christianity is the only religion that actually honors women, we honor our women. If it was something, if if the Lord didn't want women that involved, he could have actually revealed himself to one of his disciples, to one of his apostles, but yet and still he revealed it to a woman and he sent her on. Remember uh the Samaritan woman who I will talk about in a little bit. The Lord, uh Jesus, when he was at the will, he talked to her, he sent and she went into the town and told the men, Hey, come meet this man who might be the Messiah. He taught me everything I've ever known. So the point that I'm making is that don't don't ever don't take any of this that I'm saying as if women are not important in the body of Christ. God forbid, women are very important in the body of Christ. And I want to get to what Paul is telling Timothy in 2 Timothy, 2 Timothy chapter 1, verse 5. Let's listen up. For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. Why is Paul telling Timothy this? Because he's pointing to the fact that Timothy, who's going to be a great man of God himself, Paul, who is an apostle, talking to this young man who is going to be a great man of God, Paul is saying what? He's saying that I want you to be mindful and remember where your faith first came from. Who were the people who taught you and brought you up in the scriptures? It was his grandmother and his mother. So I want to almost I want to get ready to close out by saying that don't think that women are not important in the body of Christ, because there's a lot of us who it was a woman who first actually brought us to
Deborah Samaritan Woman Priscilla Claims
SPEAKER_00Christ. Now, I want to close this by saying a few things because someone may hear this and they may say, Okay, brother Barin, you know, uh, you know, there there were women who were who were pastors in in the Bible. Some of you may heard heard this before, and I'm gonna go to three three women that they bring up, and it is absolutely false. The first one is Deborah. In the book of Judges, Deborah was a judge. There are a lot of women, and I'm gonna be honest, a lot of men who do not who are feminized and uh who do not know the scriptures who think that they I I have heard this so many times. But what about the board? What about the board? Deborah was a judge. What a judge was in uh back in the back in those days were it was political and it was military. Now, Deborah was a judge called by the Lord to judge Israel, but one thing she was not called to do was she was not called to preach and teach the word of God to men and to the congregation. You can look all you want, you're not gonna find it. Number two, the Samaritan woman. You heard me just talk to the Samaritan woman. It's crazy what I'm about to say, but I've actually heard people say that the Samaritan woman was a pastor because the Lord spoke to her and told her everything she ever did, and when she ran back to the town, she was because she was talking to the men, and she said, Hey, there's a man down here at this well who told me everything I ever did. Is he the Messiah? They always forget what she said after that. She said, Come down here so you can hear it for yourself. Come so you can hear this man. She was not a preacher, she was taking the she was taking the joy that the Lord just gave her because he forgave her of her sins, and she's telling the men, and she's telling the men, you know, come back down here with me so you can meet this man as well. And the last uh person I would touch on is Priscilla. Because I have heard people say that, oh, Priscilla, you know, was a was a preacher of the word with her with her husband Aquila. Listen, Priscilla and Aquila were a husband and wife team, and Apollos, they were just you uh they got him straight because his doctrine was a little screwy. They were a husband and wife team, they were not a husband and wife pastor team. So this nonsense of where you see these churches where it says uh uh pastor, you know, Mike and Sarah, that's unbiblical. His wife is his wife is not the pastor. Now he may be a pastor. Now I'm gonna say he's probably not a pastor if he's got his wife standing up there with him saying that she's the co-pastor. But Priscilla and Aquilla were not the original uh pastor and co-pastor. They were a husband and wife team who knew the word of God, who went around straightening out people's doctrine. It would be like my wife being strong in the scriptures and her and I talking to a person, getting their spiritual mind right, or correcting them, because women can absolutely correct you in the scriptures. It's nothing wrong with a husband and wife team in the scriptures that way, teaching and and and correcting people. But Priscilla and Aquila and her husband Aquila were not a husband and wife tag team, pastor duo. Actually, neither of them were pastors, they were just believers who kept their nose in the scriptures and they uh took the crooked ways and laid them straight, or when they came across uh a man or a woman, they gave them the word of God so they would be on the straight and narrow.
Qualifications For Men Who Lead
SPEAKER_00But what is your thoughts on the uh Southern Baptist Convention? Uh I hope that all of you, you know what? Matter of fact, I'm not even gonna say I hope because if you're hanging out over here on Bereen's Corner, you are a serious student of the Bible, you know that I am not gonna lead you astray, I'm not gonna come with you with any biases, and as I said earlier, what I think does not matter, it's just what said the word of God. I gave you a bunch of scriptures that you read with me. I gave you this the bunch of scriptures that you can go over later for yourselves. You can pray as the Holy Spirit to reveal it to you. If you do have that type of pride in you, ask the Holy Spirit to take it out of you. My beautiful sisters out there in Christ. There are many, many, many things that you can do in the body of Christ. Nothing more important than uh being sub being loving and submitted to your husband, teaching your children and teaching the younger women how to love their husbands. Those are great responsibilities, those are great deals. The Lord called you to do it, he put it in the scriptures for you to do it, and that is exactly what you should do and follow that example. And you men out there who are sitting in these churches calling yourself under uh sitting under a woman pastor, you need to get yourself right in the Lord, you need to get in the scriptures, you need to understand where you're supposed to be and find a man who is to be qualified. You know what? Before I go, let's look at that one more time because that that is kind of tugging on me, because there is something that I I want to uh uh point out about this before we go, because I'm telling you to get under a man uh who knows the scriptures, excuse me, but let's look at this again. First Timothy 3 says it is a trustworthy statement. If any man aspires to the office of an overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, unconscious, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with dignity. But if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the house of God? He cannot be a newcomer lest he be conceited and fall into the combination occurred by the devil. He must have a good reputation with those outside the church so that he may not fall to the approach of the devil. Listen, the man also has to be qualified. So it's not just any man teaching the word of God, he has to be qualified in that word of God. He can't just be any guy who jumps up, grabs a microphone, or opens up the Bible, but he has to be qualified. So if you have been sitting with a woman pastor, get yourself under a man who knows the scriptures, who the Lord has called to break down and rightfully divide the word of truth. Alright, I just wanted to bring that to you. I thought that was a very interesting article about the SBC. I don't keep up with them that much, but that stood out to me that they are going to stand on business and they are going to denounce these women in the church. I already know what's going to happen. I already know that there's going to be a lot of women putting their feet down. They're going to they're going to dig in like a tick and they're going to take scriptures out of context and find a way to try to stay in that pool pick to keep that status, but that's not something that the Lord called you to. All right.
Closing Prayers And Final Charge
SPEAKER_00That brings us to the end of today's lesson. Thank you for sticking with me through another iron sharpens iron. I hope that we are sharpening each other with this. As always, I ask you to pray for me. I pray that I stay steadfast in the scriptures. Pray that the Lord is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Pray uh that I stay in good health. Pray that I stay in good spirits and stay steadfast in these scriptures. I am praying for you as well. I appreciate you taking time out of your morning, your afternoon, your evening, going through the word of God with me. I am praying for you as well. I pray that this lesson, that this lesson nourished you. I pray that you got something out of it. I pray that you go back and look at these at these scriptures yourselves. So you know that I'm doing nothing but standing on the word of God. You are always in my thoughts and my prayers. That is all for now. Until next time, God
